Photo Essay: Rock Climbing in Malibu

Photos and story by Sarah Vehrs

The overlook from Echo Cliffs provides a breathtaking view of the mountains inland of Malibu. The landscape is recovering from the blaze it experienced last summer, but wildflowers are beginning to make an appearance.

Daniel, an engineering student at LBSU, focuses as he lead climbs an overhanging route on Echo Cliffs.

Lynna, an LBSU grad, steps up to her first climb of the day. It's a short, intermediate climb, or for the climbers out there: a 5.10c with several lay-backs and a couple of crimps at the top that will leave you feeling like the Hulk.

David starts his first ascent of the day off strong.

Stephanie explores a cave in between rock climbs.

Lynna makes her way up the rock at a quick pace.

Stephanie celebrates after reaching the base of Echo Cliffs after an hour-long hike.
