Liquid Gold on Tap

Story By: Alex Lucio Jr.

Long Beach is considered a beer mecca because of its countless breweries, bars, and craft beer shops. Further proof of Long Beach’s love of beer is how even The Nugget Bar & Grill at Cal State Long Beach hosts a weekly Tap Takeover Thursday.

On October 4th, The Nugget hosted Belching Beaver Brewery from San Diego. Belching Beaver selected 3 different beers to serve on tap. The beers they brought were "Swerve IPA", an India Pale Ale, "OJ Vanilla" another India Pale Ale, and "Me So Honey", a blonde ale.

I went for the "Me So Honey" because I have not tried it before. It had a slightly roasted honey taste and a light hoppiness that paired together nicely. I also had the “OJ Vanilla” and was pleasantly surprised because it tasted different from any beer I have had before. It is an IPA so it had that classic bitterness, but was jam packed with an explosion of citrus and vanilla notes. With weekly rotating breweries, a big part of the fun comes from having a new brew each week.

Tap Takeover Thursday never fails to attract large buzzing crowds of students and even professors. If you do not arrive early you might have trouble finding a table because several eager beer enthusiasts gather early to make sure they grab a table or even two for some larger groups. The vibe inside the building changes quickly from people studying to cheery people enjoying themselves.

People not only come for the craft beer, but also the live music. The Nugget hosts a wide variety of bands and musicians every Thursday. On Sept. 27 the SJB Combo kicked the night off at 5 p.m. and was followed by a rock band called Child Of War at 6:30 p.m.
