Nail Art Trends for the Summer

BY: ELISSA SALDANA

Nail art has the power to make or break your outfit. If done right, your nails can make a bold fashion statement. And whether you’re the type of person who likes playing with bare nails or going all out with colorful designs, these summer nail trends bring styles everyone can try.

Before we get into colors and designs, let’s talk about shapes. This summer calls for short and rounded, oval, or almond shaped nails, rather than the more dramatic and extreme stiletto nail shape.

Shorter nails are all over the runway this season. It could be a result of the fashion world’s shift towards androgyny or simply a matter of keeping a minimalist, low-maintenance style. But whatever it is, shorter nails make our lives that much easier, especially during the summer when you don’t really want to worry about breaking a nail while playing beach volleyball or during that camping trip. Now on to colors!

Metallic Nails

Yup, it’s back. The metallic nail trend has made its way back from the 80’s and it is sticking around for the summer. Many designers opted for metallic gold and silver nails this season but other metallic colors are trending as well. It can be any color, as long as it’s metallic.

Predominant Top Color

This trend is easier to create than it looks.s. Nail artists first apply the base coat of a color and then almost completely cover it with a different top color, leaving only a little bit of the undercoat showing.

Midnight Colors

Dark colors are usually reserved for the colder seasons. But this summer, designers at runway shows opted for darker, midnight colors like dark blue, dark grey, and even black nail polish. Perhaps they got their inspiration from the warm summer night sky.

Creative French Tip Design

You really can never go wrong with a classic French manicure, and honestly, I don’t think it will ever go out of style. But this season, nail artists went for a more creative and clever take on the traditional. This can be achieved by playing around with the shape or by using eccentric colors.

Soft, Delicate and Feminine Pinks

Soft pinks are perfect for those who prefer a more romantic style. They are bright yet feminine. Those soft peachy, glossy, warm, and cool shades of pink are definitely in this summer season.

White Nails

This is one of my favorite nail colors to wear during the summer and I’m so happy to see it come back this year. White matches with pretty much anything you wear. It’s bright, bold and screams out summer time.

And last but not least…

Red Nails

Another classic and probably the sexiest of this season’s nail trends. I’m talking about all shades of red-- bright and cool reds, dark and deep reds, and orange reds. A touch of red will always radiate glamour, femininity, seduction and a bit of playfulness.
