Pharrell Williams released his newest album G I R L this week. The experienced producer used his catchy beats and clever sounds to create his sophomore solo album. G I R L takes a classic 70s-music inspired theme blended with the modern music technology available today to create Pharrell’s unique sound. The album begins with the track “Marilyn Monroe.” It’s a beat-heavy, pop-infused R&B track with a strong base where he sings about wanting a “different girl” rather than the typical “Mariyn Monroe’s.”
Pharrell also called on a few of his famous friends to help lend a helping hand in creating his newest album. Justin Timberlake, Alicia Keys and Daft Punk are all featured on the album as supporters on a few killer songs. Miley Cyrus and JoJo also make uncredited appearances two songs off the 10-song album.
Every song has a similar beat, yet sounds completely different than the one before. Pharrell is able to pull this off with his creative talent and infectious beats where he masters the art of the perfect tune.
Pharrell named the album G I R L as an ode to women and the changing society of today. In an interview with BBC Radio 1, he said, “"The reason why I named it G I R L in capital letters is because when you look at it, it looks a little weird. And the reason why it does is because society is a little unbalanced.”
The album carries a very strong underlying theme of sex throughout the entire work. Songs like “Gush,” “Lost Queen” and “It Girl” all showcase their sex appeal loud and proud with lyrics like “make that p**** gush.” Though that’s as trashy as lyrics can get, the trashiness gets overlooked with the amazingly produced music he has created.
G I R L also features the popular oscar-nominated song, “Happy” from Despicable Me 2. Even though it was released in August of last year, the song is still dominating the Billboard charts.
Pharrell Williams could definitely be recognized at the 2015 Grammy awards. It is no secret that his talents are greatly appreciated come awards season. With seven Grammys already under his belt, he could easily swoop up a few more, even with an album released this early in the year.
The Virgina-native is set to join Bruno Mars on the second leg of his successful Moonshine Jungle Tour this summer. G I R L is out in stores now.
