The Long Beach State Dirtbags extended their winning streak to four games with a 12-0 drubbing of the visiting Utah Valley Wolverines. Long Beach State (10-9) recorded season-high 18 hits with Richard Prigatano leading the way going 3-5 with four RBI’s and catcher Eric Hutting as well as Johnny Bekakis each adding three hits as well. Nick Sabo delivered yet another solid performance on the mound. The junior southpaw tossed seven shutout innings while scattering three hits and only walking one en route to his 2nd win in three decisions and Josh Frye shut the door with two scoreless innings in relief.
The Wolverines (3-10) did not help their cause much in this game by committing four errors, all of which came in the 3rd inning which was when Long Beach State began to pull away. Michael Hill singled to centerfield off of Wolverines starter Andrew Freter scoring Colby Brenner and Richard Prigatano singled home Hill following an error by Freter to make it 3-0 Dirtbags. Another error by the Utah Valley defense allowed Richard Prigatano and first baseman Ino Patron to score making it 5-0.
That sizable lead stretched even farther in the 6th inning when Long Beach plated five more runs courtesy of a three-run triple by Richard Prigatano, an RBI double by Garrett Hampson and an RBI single by Colby Brenner widening the gap to 10-0.
A Colton Vaughn RBI single in the 7th and a pinch-hit RBI single by Alex Bishop in the 8th brought the total to 12-0 in favor of the Dirtbags.
Long Beach State resumes their series with Utah State tomorrow when Andrew Rohrbach will take the mound for the Dirtbags against the Wolverines’ Ryan Evans. First pitch is set for 2pm.
