10 Books to Read: "Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? (And Other Concerns)"

As a writer, actress, comedian and author, Mindy Kaling proves that her humorous way of thinking and expressing herself gives people an outlet for entertainment and comedy. Her first book, titled, "Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? (And Other Concerns)" gives readers an inside look at her hilarious upbringing, her start in the entertainment business and how her time on the US version of "The Office" led to a breakout career.

Anyone who watched Kaling as Kelly Kapoor on "The Office" saw her brilliant humor brought to life through this airhead character who was self-absorbed and obsessed with all things Hollywood. In a way, Kaling possesses many of same traits at Kapoor, but she is actually very intellectual and can bring laughter even at a funeral with her witty one-liners.

"IEHOWM" (an acronym for Kaling’s book) begins with a hilarious essay of her childhood and how her Indian culture played a huge part in her upbringing. The culture barrier was not very apparent to Kaling as a child, but when she depicts her memories in the book, she adds a dry humor approach while keeping it honest and straightforward.

She also discusses her time as an intern for Jay Leno and how that helped her career by getting her foot into the entertainment door. There is also an essay in the book about her struggle of being overweight as a child and how it still affects her life today, but of course, she puts a humorous twist on the sensitive subject to show her acceptance of her body.

The book received mixed reviews since her actual story ends a little after the halfway point in the book. She focuses on everyday struggles she encounters about love, technology and people in general. Though the book is structured with great detail, it fails to tell a story from the beginning of the book until the end. This is a small price to pay as she incorporates her humor into every page of this Top 10 New York Times Bestseller.

As if her book isn’t enough to keep you laughing, her constant tweets about life are just as funny and provide an everyday boost of happiness to her Twitter followers.

In March of 2013, Kaling announced that she is working on a second book that will highlight the highs and lows she encountered after writing her first book. Kaling also stars in her own show titled "The Mindy Project" on FOX, which is currently in its second season.
